What Is Radiator Heat?

All of our units are served by a central steam heat system designed to provide more than ample heat on demand. Some tenants have never seen this type of system, don't know how to operate it, and have complained about a "banging" sound.

Here are some hints.

Turn the black knob (usually on the upper left of the radiator) counter-clockwise to turn on your radiator. TURN THE KNOB FULL ON and when heat is not desired, TURN IT FULL OFF If you only turn the knob partially, the radiator system will "bang".

The boiler has automatic sensors outside which will turn on the heating system. Once the steam starts through your radiator, a temperature sensor (located at the bottom of your radiator usually under the black knob mentioned above) will open to allow the cold air trapped in the radiator to escape. This will cause a brief "hissing" sound and is normal. .

Remember, for the system to operate properly, the black knob has to be fully open. If you are having any problem with the radiators in your unit, please contact the manager.

There should also be a radiator pan under your radiator to catch condensation. If your pan is missing, please inform management so it can be replaced.  Damage can result to the hardwood floors if a catch pan is missing.
